Mosquitoes and Disease – What New Jersey Residents Should Know

Mosquitoes are annoying, but unfortunately, these common summer pests present much more serious dangers. Our mosquito treatment services experts share important information from the New Jersey Department of Health about diseases that can be spread by mosquito bites.

Communicable Diseases Transmitted by Mosquitoes

Here are the primary mosquito-spread diseases found in New Jersey:

  • Eastern equine encephalitis may sound more likely to infect horses, but the threat to humans is real. Not everyone infected with EEE, which involves inflammation of the brain, becomes ill. In severe cases, symptoms often present suddenly with no warning. They include headaches, high fever, chills, and vomiting, with advanced cases progressing to disorientation and seizures.
  • St. Louis encephalitis is another inflammation of the brain, with most cases occurring in Eastern and Central U.S. As with EEE, infection with the SLE virus doesn’t always result in illness, with older adults being most susceptible. Initial symptoms are fever, headache, nausea, and fatigue.
  • West Nile virus made the headlines in 1999, when it was first identified in the U.S. Most cases arise during summer and early fall. Anyone is at risk, but adults over age 50 and individuals with compromised immune systems are the most vulnerable. Onset of the disease usually causes flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, and body aches, occasionally accompanied by a rash.

Tips for Preventing Mosquito Bites

1. Eliminate standing water in buckets, wheelbarrows, watering cans, and other containers.

2. Apply EPA-approved insect repellent on areas of exposed skin.

3. Use netting to cover infants in strollers and carriages.

4. Check for tears and holes in door and window screens.

5. Contact a mosquito treatment services provider.
