Just the thought of having fire ants around can strike fear in NJ homeowners thanks to their ability to sting and attack in large numbers. However, these invasive ants aren’t a problem in our state yet. If you see reddish ants, they’re more likely to be other kinds of ants. Carpenter Ants
You might be familiar with black carpenter ants, but some can have a reddish-brown color. This coloring makes them appear similar to fire ants. These carpenter ants build nests in wood structures and trees rather than in the ground as fire ants do. They’re also a lot bigger than fire ants.
Crazy Ants
Crazy ants are roughly the same size as fire ants. Some of them have tawny coloring that resembles fire ant coloring. These ants don’t build mounds like fire ants do. They also move in erratic ways rather than in a straight line.
Acrobat Ants
Acrobat ants stand on their heads when they’re alarmed, which fire ants don’t do. These ants have a reddish-brown coloring and stingers, so they’re easily confused with fire ants.
Velvet Ants
Velvet ants are fuzzy ants with a reddish coloring. Fire ants don’t have any fuzz on their bodies. Velvet ants also run away when they’re alarmed instead of attacking as fire ants do.
