What to Know About New Jersey’s Roof and Norway Rats

Several different kinds of rodents have made their home in NJ. Norway rats and roof rats are among the more common rodents you might see in your yard or house. You’ll need Tom’s River NJ rat control if either of these rats infest your home or property.

Norway Rats

Norway rats are the most common kind of rodent found in cities in the U.S. These rats, also called sewer rats or brown rats, have a brownish or grayish coloring with a white belly. Norway rats have small ears, a blunt nose and grow up to ten inches  in body length. These rats form large colonies and can be found below buildings, lower floors of homes, ponds and other areas on or near the ground. They feed on many different things, but they mainly prefer to eat fresh grains and meat.

Roof Rats

Roof rats are invasive rats that came to NJ on ships. These rats grow up to eight inches long and have smooth, black-colored fur with large ears. These rats tend to be found in higher areas, since they are excellent climbers. You might find them on your roof or in trees where they scurry around looking for fruits, vegetables and grains.
