Carpenter Bees – Did You Know These Interesting Facts?

Carpenter bees can be a common sight around some NJ homes in spring. How much do you know about these insects? Learn more about carpenter bees with these fascinating facts.

Carpenter Bees Aren’t Big on Stinging

While you might need professional pest control in Monmouth County for wood damage, you don’t have to worry much about being stung. Male carpenter bees might dive at you to protect their nest, but they don’t have stingers. Females do, but they hardly ever sting people.

Females Die Shortly After Laying Eggs

Carpenter bees don’t usually have large populations in one area. Females only lay up to ten eggs before dying, which happens soon after they’ve finished laying eggs. Male carpenter bees die soon after they finish mating. This helps prevent carpenter bees from forming big populations compared to other insects.

Carpenter Bees Are Different Colors

You might see photos that show these bees as being black and yellow. However, carpenter bees come in different colors, including black and blue, metallic blue, green and bluish-purple.

Carpenter Bees Prefer Plain Wood

You can prevent carpenter bees from nesting in your home by painting wood exteriors with a polyurethane coating. Using pressure-treated lumber also works well to keep them away.
