How to Tell if You Have Rats or Mice in Your Home or Office

Having rodents of any kind running around your home or office isn’t good news. Knowing whether you have rats or mice, though, can make a difference when it comes to catching them. Use these tips to determine which rodents you have, then get help from professional pest control in Monmouth County.

Size

Mice grow up to 7.5 inches long from the tip of their nose to the tip of their tail when they are fully grown. Rats can measure up to 18 inches long from nose to tail.

Coloring

Mice and rats can have grayish or brownish fur, so it can be hard to tell them apart from their color. However, rats can have black fur.

Tail

Rats and mice differ in the way their tails look. Rats have tails that are thick and scaly with no hair. Mice have thinner tails that have a little hair on them.

Nose

Mice and rats have different noses as well. Rats have a snout that is broader and more rounded, while mice have snouts that have a more narrow, triangular shape.

Droppings

Rats have droppings that are roughly 3/4 inch long and blunt at the ends. Mice have droppings that are 1/4 inch long and have pointy ends.
