What Are the Top Wood Eating Insects in New Jersey?

While some insect pests contaminate food, others go after the wood in your home. These pests can end up causing extensive and costly damage if they’re not eliminated. Find out which pests might require the services of a wood eating insect exterminator in NJ.

Termites

Termites are the top insects that consume wood. These pests feed on cellulose in wood beams or other wood structures. Over time, this can cause structural damage to homes. Termites tend to stay hidden from view, making them hard to spot.

Look for mud tubes or signs of termite swarms to see if you have a termite problem. You might also have holes or soft spots in wood that termites have been eating. Since they can cause widespread damage, you’ll need to start termite control as soon as possible.

Carpenter Ants

These big ants don’t actually eat wood, but they do dig through it. This tunneling behavior can lead to areas of weakened wood in your home. Carpenter ants may not cause damage that’s as severe as termite damage. But it’s still important to have an infestation handled as soon as you can.

Watch for carpenter ants crawling around inside your home or on outdoor structures. This may mean that you have an infestation.

Carpenter Bees

These large bees are similar to carpenter ants in that they don’t consume wood. They also dig through wood in order to build their nest. If carpenter bees keep using the same holes again and again, this can create unsightly damage to your home.

You might see these bees flying around the exterior of your home, especially during spring, if you have an infestation.
