Whats That Brown Spider in My Woodpile? Not Likely a Brown Recluse

So you head outside to get more wood for the fireplace and you spot a brown spider with spindly legs inside the pile. Before you hit the panic button, let our NJ commercial pest control experts put your mind at ease about the possibility of brown recluse spiders invading your home.

Does New Jersey Have Brown Recluse Spiders?

The simple answer is no. While there are rarely guarantees on anything, brown recluse spiders are not found in New Jersey. You may have heard people recount stories of spotting a brown recluse or having a “friend” who was bitten by one, but those are cases of inaccurate identification.

Identifying Brown Spiders

Brown recluses prefer to hang out in places that are warm and dry. Their natural habitat in the United States extends as far as West Virginia in the northeast region. Here’s a look at other varieties of brown spiders that are more likely to be found in this area:

  • The wolf spider is the largest spider found in NJ, extending as much as four inches in length. Their telltale feature is two rows of two large eyes, with a row of four smaller eyes below.
  • As their name implies, the fishing spider feels at home close to water. There are several different varieties of fishing spiders, but none of them are considered dangerous.
  • The American grass spider is the sprinter of the species, able to turn on quick bursts of speed. Characteristics include dark and white stripes running front to back and a set of eight eyes arranged in an oval shape.
