Do Bugs Die in Winter?
That really depends on the type of bug and where they are during winter. Some bugs can’t handle freezing temperatures, especially during cold snaps that last for days. These insects do tend to die off. However, bugs that manage to find shelter can easily survive the winter months. These insects typically head for indoor areas to escape from the cold, as well as ice and snow.
Spiders, ants, and other pests can find ways to get into homes, which provide them with a dry, warm place to stay. They might also find food and water in homes and businesses. Keep in mind that some bugs nest inside walls or other spaces, making them year-round residents.
Do Bugs Hibernate in Winter?
Some bugs enter a state that’s similar to hibernation in order to survive winter. This state, known as diapause, occurs when bugs have little to no activity. Insects that enter diapause need to find somewhere safe to go first. Ladybugs and other insects might seek shelter in homes. Others might burrow deep into the ground where it’s warmer than the surface.
Bugs that go into diapause come out of this state as spring arrives. When warm weather returns, they resume their usual activity. If they’re in your home, you might see them emerging from hiding.
