Five Common NJ Spiders You’re Likely to See This Winter

Did you know more than 500 species of spiders can be found in New Jersey? Fortunately, you won’t find all of them in your home this winter. Our exterminator Monmouth County NJ experts identify five common varieties you might encounter.

Five Common Species of Spiders in NJ

1. While wolf spiders are notable for their striped appearance, their most distinctive feature is multiple sets of eyes. From bottom to top, they have a horizontal row of four smaller eyes, one pair of larger eyes, and another pair of smaller eyes.

2. American grass spiders are the track stars of the insect world, able to run at lightning speed. Their elongated abdomen is marked with two white stripes and their eight similar-sized eyes form an oval shape.

3. Fishing spiders get their name from their semi-aquatic nature. This species hunts prey by placing their legs on water to detect movement by other insects or small fish.

4. Black and yellow garden spiders can be found in every state in the country. These colorful spiders are easy to spot with their yellow and black abdomen, silver or gray cephalothorax and orange legs.

5. Red spotted ant mimic spiders are so-called due to their resemblance to another common insect. The similarity is heightened when they walk with their front legs in the air, giving them the appearance of antennae.
