Paper Wasps: What to Know and How to ID this Wasp

Paper wasps are one of the many stinging insects to watch for in NJ during summer. Knowing how to identify these wasps and their distinctive nests can help you determine if you have an infestation on your property. If so, Tom’s River NJ pest control experts can help you deal with these bugs.

What Do Paper Wasps Look Like?

Paper wasps are larger wasps with a reddish, brown or black coloring and yellow stripes or markings. These wasps can grow to be around 2 cm long as adults.

How Do Paper Wasps Behave?

Paper wasps usually won’t attack unless they consider you a threat to their nest. This is why it’s important to be able to identify paper wasp nests and have them safely removed. Paper wasps build colonies in early spring, and the queens find a safe place to hibernate during winter. You might find these queens inside your home in fall or spring.

What Does a Paper Wasp Nest Look Like?

Paper wasps build nests that look like an upside down umbrella. These nests are made from papery materials and are usually built in out of the way places, such as under eaves or in areas of high grass or a lot of vegetation, which can make them hard to see.

If you have paper wasps around, please contact Allison Pest Control for safe removal. Our Tom’s River NJ pest control professionals can eliminate paper wasps and paper wasp nests, so you don’t have to risk being stung.
