Researchers Target the Decoding of Ant Smells as Communication

Dogs are known for their keen sense of smell, but you might not know that ants have one, too. In fact, ants use smell to communicate with other members of their colony. Researchers are looking into understanding more about how this works in order to learn more about ants as social insects.

Socializing through Smell

Students at Bucknell University spent the summer months studying Indian jumping ants to find out more about how they use their sense of smell to interact and communicate. These researchers worked in new biology labs and carefully studied the way these ants use their olfactory receptors to send messages to other ants in their colony. This research is expected to help them discover more about the social life of ants within their colonies as it relates to their sense of smell.
