Stinging Insects in New Jersey Part 1

Stinging insects are common in New Jersey, but not all are created equal. Hornets, wasps, and yellow jackets each bring unique characteristics to the table, and knowing how to identify them is crucial to staying safe and protecting your family.

Hornets: The Gentle Giants

The largest of these three are hornets. With their robust bodies and black-and-white markings (often mistaken for oversized wasps), they stand out. Although their size can be intimidating, hornets remain relatively peaceful unless someone threatens their aerial nests. They prefer to prey on live insects, which makes them excellent for natural pest control. If you spot a large paper-like nest hanging from a tree or building, chances are it belongs to hornets.

Wasps: The Diverse Diners

Wasps are slimmer and more streamlined compared to hornets. Known for their dietary flexibility, they can munch on anything from insects to sugary drinks left outside. Their nests, often crafted from a paper-like substance, are often found in sheltered areas like eaves or sheds. These insects generally act less aggressively than yellow jackets but will sting without hesitation if you provoke them or disturb their nests.
