Researcher Paulo Verardi has been working on a vaccine for the Zika virus to help lower its risks to developing fetuses. The Zika virus carries a risk of causing serious birth defects in fetuses, including microcephaly, when pregnant women are infected.
Verardi received funding and immediately began working on a vaccine by using Zika’s genetic sequence. The approach his vaccine takes is to create virus-like particles that help the immune system learn to identify and destroy the Zika virus. Tests done on mice have shown that this vaccine is effective at offering protection.

The Zika virus vaccine isn’t ready to be used in humans yet, so it’s still important to protect yourself and your family from mosquitoes.
