Common Pests That Live in Christmas Trees

Few things bring the holidays to life like the scent of a real pine tree in your home. Choosing a live Christmas tree is a beloved tradition for many, officially marking the beginning of the festive season. As you bring that fresh evergreen inside, though, you could also be inviting some unwelcome visitors—pests hidden among the branches.

Most tree farms do their best to shake out insects, but a handful often remain out of sight. Knowing what kinds of pests might be hiding in your Christmas tree will help you keep your celebrations bug-free.

The Usual Suspects Hiding in the Needles

As you search for the perfect tree, it’s smart to check for more than just shape and fullness. Tiny intruders like aphids are some of the most common pests found on Christmas trees. These small insects feed on tree sap and may leave behind a sticky substance. When inside your warm home, they can become active, mistaking the temperature for springtime.

You might also spot spiders nestled in the tree’s dense branches. While their presence can be surprising, most spiders hitching a ride on Christmas trees are harmless and prefer to stay hidden. In addition, bark beetles could be inside the trunk. These beetles are small and dark; they aren’t a danger to your furniture since they only survive in living trees.

Every so often, you may find praying mantis egg sacs attached to branches. They can look like small, tan lumps stuck onto the tree. The warmth in your house can cause these eggs to hatch, which could result in tiny mantises emerging—certainly not the kind of holiday surprise you’re hoping for!

Simple Prevention Tips

Luckily, keeping pests away from your Christmas tree is easy and doesn’t involve strong chemicals. Avoid using aerosols or pesticides, as these can be hazardous and flammable on indoor trees. Instead, shake the tree vigorously outside before bringing it in; this helps remove most loose bugs and debris.

Take a close look at the trunk and branches using a flashlight. If you find egg masses or old nests, trim off those limbs before setting up. Should you notice pests later on, use a vacuum to gently collect them.

With just a bit of care, you’ll make sure the only things glowing in your home are your holiday lights. If you suspect any pest issues this season, Allison Pest Control is here to provide peace of mind!
