Is It Possible I have Carpenter Ants? How to Know

Most people think of ants as unwelcome guests at a picnic, but some of them can do more serious damage. Watch for these signs that let you know it’s time to call a carpenter ant exterminator.

Carpenter Ants vs. Termites

Carpenter ants and termites are often perceived to be the same, but there are significant differences. The former seeks damp or water-damaged wood in which they can burrow to build their nest. On the other hand, termites actually consume healthy wood in the process of constructing their homes.

What are the tell-tale differences that let you know which pest you’re dealing with?

  • Carpenter ants leave small piles of wood shavings outside the entry hole. Since termites eat wood, they leave no such evidence behind.
  • Termites traditionally travel through external mud tubes constructed of wood, soil, and saliva.

Physical Characteristics of Carpenter Ants

At first glance, carpenter ants resemble the more common species of ants. Size does make a difference here, as carpenter ants are the largest native species of ant found in the United States. Workers can reach three-quarters of an inch or more, with queens growing even longer.

Color is another distinguishing feature. While other ants are black, carpenter ants also have red markings on their head, thorax, and abdomen.

Other Signs of Carpenter Ants

  • When you knock on wood that’s infested with carpenter ants, it returns a hollow sound.
  • You may hear a soft crinkling sound within the walls that’s more noticeable at night.
  • Trees and woodpiles on your property may show signs of carpenter ants, which indicates the interior of your home is at risk.
