Ant Or Termite? How To Identify These New Jersey Nuisances

Termites and carpenter ants both damage wood but telling the difference between them can be tough. How do you know if you need NJ ant control service or termite control service? The following can help you determine which pest is in your home.

Size

Carpenter ants are some of the largest ants in NJ. These ants can be larger than termites, although some are smaller. This means you shouldn’t rely on size to figure out if you have termites or ants in your home.

Coloring

The color of the bugs you see might help you determine what you’re dealing with. Termites are lighter in color than carpenter ants, which are typically black.

Antennae

Take a look at the antennae on the pests in your home. You’ll see bent antennae on carpenter ants and straight antennae on termites.

Waist Shape

Carpenter ants have a narrow waist, like most other ants. Termites have a thicker waist that isn’t well-defined.

Wings

Carpenter ants can have wings, just like some termites. Carpenter ants have front wings that are longer than their hind wings.

Behavior

You’re more likely to see carpenter ants out and about inside your home if they have invaded. Termites tend to remain out of sight as they consume wood and travel to and from their nests. Termites also leave holes in walls with sawdust near them.
