Subterranean Termites – The Best Control Method Is Prevention

Subterranean termites are a common type of termite in the U.S. These termites can cause widespread damage to homes for years before they’re found. Instead of waiting until you need NJ termite control for an infestation, take steps now to prevent termite problems.

Reduce Sources of Moisture

Subterranean termites are drawn to moisture, so eliminating it reducing it helps keep them away. Make sure your home’s downspouts and gutters are working properly, so that they move water away from your foundation. This helps prevent moisture problems from developing in crawlspaces and basements. You should also check the humidity level in crawlspaces, and improve ventilation to reduce excess moisture.

Prevent Access to Wood

Subterranean termites consume wood, which is what makes them so destructive to homes. Avoid burying scraps of wood or lumber in your yard, since this can attract termites. Keep wood from contacting soil with a one-inch gap between wood structures and soil. Store piles of firewood away from your home and other structures, such as sheds and garages.

Seal Up Access Points

Subterranean termites can get into your home through cracks in the exterior or around doors and windows. Look for crevices and cracks in your foundation and other exterior parts of your home, and seal these up. This stops termites from being able to build mud tubes from the nest to your home interior.
