Mild Winters and Damp Springs Lead to Increased Summer Pests

Sunny skies and higher temperatures draw people outdoors, but what about the pest population? How does weather affect their behavior? Take a look at these summertime predictions to see if you may need pest control in Ocean County NJ.

Goodbye Winter, Hello Pests?

In general, warm weather favors humans and insects alike. On the other hand, while most people don't appreciate rainy weather, excessive moisture helps create conditions that allow pests to thrive.

According to Jim Fredericks, Ph.D., chief entomologist for the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), the rainy spring and summer predicted for much of the country is beneficial to ticks, mosquitoes and other insects that transmit diseases. Dampness is also likely to bring an increase in nuisance pests, such as termites and cockroaches, which calls for proactive pest control in Ocean County NJ and other areas.

Return of the Cicadas

Dr. Fredericks goes on to point out another insect to watch out for in 2021. Cicadas, which emerge on 17-year cycles, will be making an appearance this year. Brood X, the largest in the United States, is expected to spread across 15 states, including the Northeast and New England. While cicadas don't pose a health risk, their distinctive "singing" can reach up to 100 decibels.
