The Gates Foundation Works to Engineer Malaria-Resistant Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes in some parts of the world are known for much more than their itchy bites. Some types of mosquitoes in Central America, South America and other areas are able to spread a serious disease known as malaria, which can be life-threatening. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation plans on working on a new mosquito breed that blocks malaria.

Controlling Malaria with Mosquito Science

The Gates Foundation has partnered with a British mosquito control company called Oxitec to create a strain of mosquitoes that could help control malaria. The company has previously developed a similar strain with the Aedes aegypti mosquito to control dengue, Zika and other illnesses. The new project will focus on the Anopheles mosquito that is responsible for spreading malaria. The Gates Foundation hopes to use these mosquitoes in hard-hit areas, such as South Asia, South and Central America and eastern Africa.
