What’s Bugging You? What to Know About Hornets and Their Nests

Many insects are falsely maligned as hornets, a sub-species of wasps. However there are only about 20 species of these aggressive airborne acrobats in the world. Large and in-charge, they’re in a class of their own, some sporting venom that can be potentially deadly.

How to Identify Hornets
To determine if you need NJ hornet control, you need to first determine if you have hornets. An ideal way to rule out confusion is by locating and identifying hornet nests – albeit from a safe distance. Gray, oval-shaped, and paper-like, hornet nests are comprised of hornet saliva and wood. They start as small, honeycomb-looking objects, and expand to a hanging football-shape at full growth.

How are Hornets Different from Wasps?
Hornets have wider heads and more rounded abdomens than wasps, and are distinctively orange-brown, unlike wasps, which are yellow and black. Hornet nests are commonly confused with paper wasps, which remain open, with no protective covering.

Things to Know When Hornets Must Go
If you need NJ hornet control, the most important thing to remember is that this is not a DIY endeavor. Hornet colonies are large, with up to 700 members (in the thousands for yellow jacket nests), so hornets pose a huge safety risk. Small or large, the best way to eliminate their nests is to call a pro.
